When you go to Rome for the fist time, for sure, you want to visit the “top ten things to see in Rome” such as the Colosseum, Navona Square, The Spanish Steps, etc. If you are lucky to be back for the second or third time (maybe because you threw a coin in the Trevi fountain and your wish came true), you can enjoy the Eternal City slower. Savor the less crowded spots and museums full of gems. For example, you can stroll in the Tiberina island which is a boat shaped island on the Tiber river. Learn about its interesting history and colorful legends.
If you want to beat the crowd of the Vatican museum, go to Palazzo Barberini. The collection and the palace itself are outstanding. You can find the Historical National Gallery, walk along the fine architecture of the grandi maestri of Maderno, Borromini and Bernini and admire the beautiful frescos.
Another gem is, in my opinion, the Protestant Cemetery. Because Rome has always attracted visitors from all over the world, it is the final burial place of many prominent figures such as well known poets like John Keats and Percy Shelley. This quiet place is packed with history and beautiful monuments where you can relax and meditate. I still have a vivid memory of the beautiful “Angel of Grief”.
These are only few suggestions, of course. There is so much to see, do and experience. This is why you need go back 100 times more!

There is so much to see in Rome! I also think it’s great if tourists can take advantage of the classic Roman dishes such as cacio e pepe and carciofi alla guidia (deep fried artichokes). They are so addictive!
I haven’t seen Palazzo Barberini. Perhaps on my next trip I will make sure I visit it.
